Our
free-range peacocks and peahens have been here since 1982. Each hen
raises 5-7 peachicks per year. If eggs are taken by humans from the
"early nest", the peahens will lay eggs from May - August, averaging
30-40 eggs. All are fertile, but may be used in recipes (1 peacock egg =
2 chicken eggs). Peacocks
molt in Fall and their feathers may be collected & sold (one tail = 100 eyes).
To raise peacocks you must have
habitat.
Free-range peacocks need tall trees and some fields or a large yard. If you have neighbors
close by you must build an aviary; (20 x 30 x 12). The aviary should have a perch at least
6ft. high. The peacocks tail reaches 6 ft. at maturity.
Our peacocks don't stray too far from home, but are
devastating to gardens. Our garden is 2000 feet from the habitat with a nut orchard
between. If they stray towards neighbors, we encourage them to come home with a coffee can
rattling irresistible dry cat food.
While in the aviary they are fed a wholesome
chicken feed without additives, grit (#2), wild birdseeds, and treats from the kitchen
e.g. salads, pasta, fruit peelings, pumpkin seeds, etc. When they are outdoors they do
well on their own - just treats. We do not hand feed as cocks may be aggressive if
spoiled.
Peacocks are field birds similar to pheasant &
turkey. They live 30 years and are loyal to home if they are taught where home is! Eight
weeks of aviary life is recommended.
