During the Great Depression, Jim's grandparents moved onto a farm in Iowa where the soil was poor and crops were marginal, at best. The farmhouse was small and uncomfortable, with no running water or insulation. During the winter, ice formed in the kitchen sink! To raise their spirits, the family of Nolte's named their farm Laff-a-lot, thinking that if they laughed a lot, things would get better. Eventually, the Nolte's lot did improve. Two generations later, Jim and Minerva Nolte found a plot of rich land in Oregon. In honor of those who paved the way, they named this new farm "Laffalot". Minerva hails from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky where her family raised crops, and breeding stock (primarily beef cattle and horses). With 50 years experience, she manages Laffalot Farm. |
